Saab 9-3 Review

The Saab 9-3 has a strong following, with high brand loyalty, it is crucial for Saab to get the 9-3 right. Well, there’s plenty of choice in the engine department that’s for sure. Petrol units have three variants, all of which come from a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, power output ranges from 148-, 174- and 207bhp. Diesel buyers again have three choices, from a 1.9-litre engine; power comes in 118-, 148- and 179bhp guises.

The way the 9-3 rides and handles is extremely important in this sector, with rivals such as the 3-Series BMW and Audi A4 amazingly competent in this sector, Saab has to step the game up to compete. Unfortunately, this is were the 9-3 falls flat; the response through the steering wheel is lacking in feel and through the bends you’re never going to crack a smile. It’s a real shame because the basics are done very well, but you just sense that the drivers of the German cars will be enjoying a much more rewarding drive.

Overall though, the Saab 9-3 is a great alternative to the Bavarian de-facto standard that most will go for. There’s a strong range of engines and the 9-3 will give you a sense of individuality; something the German rivals cannot compete with.
